The phylogenetic tree of the Sox9 protein sequences was constructed using the neighbor-joining method. The node values represent the percent bootstrap confidence level derived from replicates. The accession numbers of the Sox9 proteins are shown in Supplementary Table 9. The five classes are comprised of Mammalia, Aves, amphibian, Reptilian and Osteichthyes. Meanwhile, Sox2 from zebrafish Danio rerio (accession number: BAE48583.1) was chosen as the out-group protein sequence
