I am the creator of one of the technologies discussed in this article: the ECOCEAN Whale Shark Photo-identification Library and also a co-author on a cited paper (Arzoumanian et. al) within it. I have started an expanded discussion on this topic, including a mention of my concerns with the authors' comments about our system without having direct experience with it.
