The effects of opponent size and acoustic condition on changes in bubble-nest construction. a Fish exposed first to control conditions exhibit increases in nest size and then decreases under repeated noise exposure until flooring, whereas b fish first exposed to noise exhibit decreases that persist under control conditions; in both scenarios effects are greater for fish that also faced bigger opponents first. c Comparisons of post-contest changes in nest size from pooled data across the 3 weeks show that following exposure to control conditions there is no significant change in bubble-nest size, but under noise conditions there is an overall decrease in size.
